Oklahoma State Cowboys basketball star Dee Mitchell got a big surprise during his recent afternoon shift break at Walmart as a fruit and vegetables stocker.

Mitchell’s coach, Mike Boynton, commandeered a team video-call conference to inform the college junior he had actually made a basketball scholarship.

Boynton called ahead to Mitchell’s Stillwater Walmart manager to approve the Jan. 17 surprise, which occurred two years to the day because Mitchell joined the basketball group; the day also happened to be his birthday, reported CBS Sports.

Upon getting the news, Mitchell buried his head in his hands, later on informing CBS Sports, “This implies everything to me. I didn’t understand what was going on. It was a real surprise.”

” It was spectacular. It felt like I was in a movie or something.”

Mitchell’s colleagues, and his colleagues by means of Zoom, rallied to congratulate him.

Yet when the Walmart manager offered her shocked staff member the rest of the night off, Mitchell declined. “No ma’am. The bananas require restocking,” he stated, according to CBS Sports.

Coach Boynton explained the afternoon as “extraordinary.” “Really seldom am I emotional. This one almost got me,” he added.

The scholarship will last for the remainder of Mitchell’s Oklahoma State University career.

Mitchell, a junior guard, very first stated his objective to sign up with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the fall of 2018 by striding into Boynton’s workplace and asking for a tryout, reported CBS Sports. Mitchell was enlisted as a walk-on and quickly earned a reputation as one to see. Boynton renewed him for another year, throughout which time Mitchell started a video game against Houston due to health problem and injury among rostered players.

Oklahoma left victorious.

By fall 2020, however, the image looked different. Mitchell’s mom lost her task in the middle of the pandemic, and Mitchell, wishing to finish his degree in Sports and Training Science, required to discover a job of his own.

Boynton ensured the young star of his put on the group, even though Mitchell considered stopping.
