Roy Keane stuns as he selects just Van Dijk as single Liverpool player who would get in Male Utd 99 treble-winning side
ROY KEANE believes Virgil van Dijk would be the only current Liverpool star to burglarize Manchester United’s treble-winning side.
The previous midfielder, 49, was an important part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team that won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1998-99.
And with the Reds marching towards a first Premier League title – and their reasonable share of records along the way – he reckons Van Dijk is the single player who could enhance that group.
Keane and Jamie Carragher selected their combined XIs on Monday Night Football and certainly had a couple of varying opinions – however did at least agree on Van Dijk changing Ronny Johnsen.
Carragher stated: “I don’t believe it’s a big choice, put Van Dijk in beside [Jaap] Stam. But who’s the very best out of those two?”
Keane concurred: “I’m a huge fan of Van Dijk. The person’s a device, but Jaap was a device, Jaap was great.
” Van Dijk [is] a touch better on the ball. The two of them together you can’t think of conceding too lots of goals.”
Both former Prem stars picked Peter Schmeichel in objective with fellow United heroes Jaap Stam, Denis Irwin, David Beckham, Keane himself – regardless of by his own admission being a ‘extremely average player’ – Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke.
And the set likewise opted for Liverpool’s colossus Van Dijk to partner Stam at the heart of the defence.
However it was at right-back and in attack they struggled to agree.
The Irishman went with former team-mate Ryan Giggs on the entrusted to Andy Cole up top together with Yorke – Carragher, on the other hand, decided to bring in Mo Salah and Sadio Hair to form a fatal front 3.
Keane was left stunned when Carragher said: “Giggs is not getting in my team.
” Evaluating him on the 1999 season, do you understand the number of goals he scored that season?
” I believe Hair is the finest left-sided winger in the world. Giggs, among the very best, however I do not believe at any phase he was the best.”
Giggs handled three league goals in the treble-winning project and Keane declined to leave the Welshman out.
He added: “Giggs did it year in, year out. Look what Giggsy carried out in the semi-final [of the FA Cup], inform me another player on this planet that could’ve done what he did against Arsenal.
” The key to me is being a constant gamer. I’ve got commitment towards Giggsy, I don’t know Mane.”
Keane eventually picked Gary Neville at full-back – not even if he gets Salford tickets for him – while Carragher snubbed his Sky Sports associate, favouring Liverpool experience Trent Alexander-Arnold rather.
The ex-United male included: “I ‘d bring Van Dijk in, possibly the right-back, but leave the rest, 4-4-2. If they go on and win the treble this year, we’ll have a different discussion.”
Viewers on Twitter broke in with their own recommendations and responded to the Keane-Carragher debate.
One said: “Starting XI should be 11 99’ Guy Utd players, duration.”
Another wrote: “Ah, nostalgia strikes again. Keane selecting his mates is a joke. 103 points from the last 105 readily available. 76 points already after simply 26 video games, that United side of 99 won the league on just 79 points.”
And a third added: “Bottom line is this existing Liverpool team will out run and out score that Male Utd group.”
Steve McClaren joined as Ferguson’s assistant at the start of 1999 and was at Old Trafford as a coach when they won the treble.
He likewise chose ten United players in his combined XI – with Van Dijk the only Kop ace to force his way in.
The ex-England boss stated: “Virgil van Dijk next to Jaap Stam, that would be invincible. No one would surpass them. However for me, seriously, just Van Dijk would enter that team.
” When you look at that Manchester United team, that is leadership throughout the entire team, and management was the key. Liverpool are establishing that now.”
