Trent Alexander-Arnold was right back to his buccaneering best, and his recover embodied Liverpool’s. Seriousness and strength returned to the champs’ football; fluency, goals and swagger too. Alexander-Arnold and his team-mates are not quiting their trophy gently.

Here was the old Liverpool, penalizing challengers with irrepressible attacking, and here, too, was the old Tottenham Hotspur, back helping opponents with ignorant defending. Also back was the old José Mourinho, blaming players for “individual errors”, which was especially real of Joe Rodon and Hugo Lloris, but also forgetting to mention that his system inhibited Spurs. It’s one thing parking the bus, however quite another thing tossing gamers under it.
