A club statement read: “Macclesfield Town can confirm that alert has actually been received from the English Football League, which charges the club with additional regulation breaches – all of which are associating with the payment of incomes due at the end of March 2020.”

The club state they are “deeply shocked” by the charges and intend to appeal them “emphatically”.

The matter has now been referred to an independent panel.

Macclesfield are currently just three points clear of rock-bottom Stevenage, so any additional points deduction would likely see them drop to the foot of the League 2 table.

With League 2 clubs set to vote to cut the season (other than the end of season promo play-offs) next week, it stays to be seen whether the bottom side would get relegated from the division.
