RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)– Atlantic Coast Conference guys’s basketball coaches are pushing the concept of having next year’s NCAA Tournament include all qualified teams in Department I.

Numerous league schools and coaches released declarations Wednesday after the coaches held their weekly call to go over the proposition, which was initially reported by Stadium. There are 357 Department I programs in the country, with NCAA spokesperson Meghan Durham stating 346 of those are qualified to play in next year’s competition.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett said the ACC coaches are “joined in highly pursuing this” in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that resulted in the cancellation of last year’s NCAA Competition days before the field of 68 was set to be exposed. Numerous coaches stated producing an everybody-gets-in format would be a reward for schools as they produce the safest conditions possible for going back to play.

” This is not a routine season,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. “It is plainly an irregular season that will need something different. Our sport needs to be agile and creative. Most significantly, an all-inclusive postseason tournament will allow an unique and extraordinary chance for every group and every student-athlete to contend for a nationwide championship.”

Durham decreased remark particularly on the proposition in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Wednesday. Last month, NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt stated the Division I oversight committees for men’s and women’s basketball planned to announce by mid-September prepare for whether the season and preseason practice would begin on time or require a hold-up due to the pandemic.

Louisville coach Chris Mack stated the proposal would supply versatility during the season without mandating a number of nonconference or conference video games to be played. And the league has actually currently experienced that scheduling challenge with football and other fall sports.

The ACC revealed in July that it would have each football team play 10 league video games – consisting of the addition of Notre Dame as a football member this year – and one nonconference video game to be played in the house state of the member school. Those schedules were released in early August, slightly more than a month prior to Thursday’s UAB-Miami game kicks off the season.

” This is a time to believe in a different way,” Clemson coach Brad Brownell said, adding: “After all these players have actually been through, what better method to reward them than the opportunity to complete in an unmatched version of the most interesting occasion in sports.”
